Hello all you Sailors & Landlubbers!

Some of us were out there sailing [& WINNING]  Congratulations to Celie and all those that won in the RACES!! There were some fantastic CREWS and it looked like everyone was enjoying themselves.  There should be plenty of "TALES" to keep the evenings by the deck pretty interesting for awhile!

Boy, this summer is moving right along.  It's time to have hotdogs, corn on the cob and watermelon. The gardens are finally giving up their ripened Tomatoes so we can add nice, fresh salads to our Potlucks.  Think the farms around do a better job of corn growing than the little gardens (takes up too much room) now if they'll just sell that stuff at a decent price.  I'll bring the BUTTER...

Is everyone ready for the BATTLE on the 3rd of July, Saturday?  Since the actual fourth is on Sunday and the big Duck Creek Fireworks and Air Show is on the 4th - this gives everyone a chance to play in our "battle" and still have time to get to the goings-on at Duck Creek the next day.  Good thinking.  The nice thing about our battle is that the Water keeps things a bit cooler if you can manage to see through the 'dripping' part. The rules of engagement have changed a wee bit for this foray. Seems they have managed to work out a system where EVERYONE will now be able to take a shot at you & your boat!  It's rather clever and should prove to be a lot of fun too! You'll need to take a peek at the ACTIVITIES Page to see the PLAN.  Shucks, I was disappointed to find out the actual Captain of the vessels will be exempt from 'catching' a bullet.  I was so ready to douse Mr. Beber this year and had plans to soak Mr. Hagen with a couple of balloons too! Maybe Patsy will take the helm and let us have a GO at him?

Well, the BATTLE was a BLAST!  Lauri and John weren't exempt even though they put their child up front as a SHIELD (oh, come on - he was having fun!)  The idea of being motorized was good as long as they kept the speed at 'idle' but when someone comes at you with a FIREHOSE that is capable of reaching 40+ feet... you sorta rev up the ol' engine to TRY to get out of the way.  To no avail.  Lots of people on those boats (a part of the Brady bunch took a ride) and then most just wanted "THROWING ARMS" on board.  It was fun watching and bets were made that none of anyone's crew had dry undies!  The balloons, when filled with water, still felt like they'd been taken out of the freezer in the ICE format... dang those are gonna leave a mark, right Mary?  It was still fun!  Everyone lived!  Buddy Hatch had to yell out 'surrender' and if he'd had a WHITE flag, he'd have been waving it. Good reason, Buddy said he & DeAnn were standing calf deep in water in his cockpit.  Then the question was asked: "Mark, just how much water does that little squirter squirt?  Mark had to 'fess up that the pump would put out about 250 gallons per minute and the 1" nozzle helped the water be directed with dead-on accuracy.  If we'd known that from the start...would we really have gone out there in the first place? Yeah, probably.  The battleship crews all managed to make it back to Harbor safely and brought appetites with them!  Even though we are all kids at heart, the real kids, Heather & Jack, seemed to be having fun running in an out of the rain - but didn't like it when they got squirted with water - go figure?

Bob Moore & Phil Howard fixed up a huge grill and started "smoking" the deck patrons along with enough hamburgers & hotdogs to feed the bunch.  The ladies cleverly put the hotdog & burger buns into a couple of roasters to keep them warm & bug free.  Patsy fixed up some beans and Elaine, Judy, Sharon, Jan, Lauri and others helped set up the rest of the food items for the DO.  Others played a card game that looked very interesting, while some continued to douse the innocent with water -- B.J. ? The group also managed a pretty good rendition of the HAPPY BIRTHDAY song for Dewey Brady - he gets all the fireworks since his Bday is July 2nd.  Robin White brought cupcakes for everyone and they were delicious.  The Commodore, Mark Gardner, with his wife, Elaine, were declared the WINNERS of the Battle - and they were!  Then Mark said that once again since everyone is here in AMERICA - that the Americans WON!  We did, didn't we !  Everyone ate their fill then started heading out toward the Grove activities: Roy Clark's concert and the City's FIREWORKS.  God Bless America

Don't forget that there is a routine Board of Governors Meeting in July on the 17th, a Saturday.

July 17, 2010

Dang It!  Pardon my French!  Found out the Caretakers had given their notice at the BOG Meeting that they were moving back to Texas... Not to let an excuse go by, & not to celebrate, but to just get together again in friendship -- A BLANKET INVITE went out that we were having a party at the Club as a FAREWELL to Mary & Phil Howard.  This gave us an opportunity to abuse Phil one more time – and get him to do the cooking. Phil cooked up a huge Pork Roast and ‘smoked’ a Turkey for the occasion.

The place was packed!  We owe much thanks to Larry and Sybil for fixing the air-conditioner just before it all got started. The menu was entirely different from many of our meals and the eclectic variety was just the perfect blend. Tom brought a fabulous Greek salad, Joe & Judy brought a hominy casserole and a carrot soufflé with pecans on top, Debi & Mayo brought a Cole slaw salad.  Ted, Rosa, Matt, Melissa & her special ‘friend’ brought a large pot of Steak Beans, Larry & Sybil brought cucumbers slices & tomatoes from their garden, BJ & Dewey also brought tomatoes and some yam crinkle fries, Patsy & Kurt brought a broccoli salad, Diana & Stan brought an auGratin potato bake, Ken Fitch brought Cookies, and Robin brought her pound cake with ‘drunken’ chocolate syrup topping. Marilyn said she was sure the calories had all been left at home and we could partake of it all…and WE DID!

The clubhouse was so full that several went outside to get out of the fray and I heard Kurt say he couldn’t hear himself THINK.  Isn’t that nice that so many came!  It was fun, noisy and delicious.  Those that had gone outside…HAD to return to the a/c of the clubhouse. The clean up was easy since we had used our best PAPER CHINA, and it was quickly all cleared away.

Marilyn became the guest of the Whites since they didn’t want her sleeping in the boat in this heat. Likewise, the Markles were invited to stay with the Hagens for the same reason. Think Ted & Rosa & gang had planned to stay but decided to head on back since their guest had already gotten enough sun!  Everyone started heading for their various homes.

A word of advice – avoid the Howards this week… remember they are packing up for the move.  I say that only because THEY ARE GIVING THINGS AWAY!  Yep, I got a Pineapple plant, some potting soil, and two nice large pots.  Oh, I know I should have said ‘no’ and that Mary will need these things as she gets settled in Texas –BUT it also gives me something to take to her! So… visit at your own risk!  They were nice Caretakers as people, diligent and SOBER!!! They will be missed!

That being said, I also remind YOU to be diligent in your cleaning up after yourself at the clubhouse (remembering to empty the trash, clean & put away the dishes) and tidying up after using the showers. Repeating those words posted at the kitchen sink… Your mother isn’t HERE!

UPDATE:  7/23/10  Kitty & Bob Moore are in MONTANA right now.  How do I know - seems Kitty sat on her cell phone just right and it DIALED us up.  She wanted to KNOW who the heck she had CALLED! Crazy woman.... hope they are having fun and in a lot cooler place for it.

Coming Soon to this website: Treasurer’s Report and notes from the Board of Governors Meeting

AND HERE IS........the Treasurer's Report from Patsy Hagen.

Cash Flow To date:  Income $54,757.19 and Expenses $25,917.28.

It’s time to rethink our club’s finances.  Last year our expenses exceeded our income and we had to dip into our emergency savings fund.

The clubs dues and slip fees have not been increased for over 20 years while the cost of operations: such as caretaker, utilities, property taxes, GRDA fees, insurance and labor have increased considerably.  This year your Board of Governors wanted to do major work on the docks but due to costs we are unable to do so at this time.  An increase in yearly dues and fees is inevitable as we must set aside money for renovations and be able to have an emergency cushion.   A committee has been formed to investigate how to increase our cash flow.  It is time to bite the bullet to resolve the clubs cash flow.

The Club’s books are always available at the BOG or General Meetings for review by the members of our Club.  These books will remain with me and I’ll gladly answer any questions you may have concerning them.      Patsy Hagen, Treasurer

HERE IS the Secretary's Report from Debi Selby.

*  The organizational meeting for the Pink Ribbon Regatta will be tomorrow, Saturday, July 31 at the club house at 7 p.m.  If you are interested in helping with this worthwhile event (either planning, working during it, or both), which is named after a dear deceased member of our club who died from breast cancer, please come.  All net proceeds go to help pay for mammograms in the local area.  If you can't make it, please give Mark Gardner, GLSC Commodore, a call, or e-mail me back.

*  Looking for....a Rear Commodore.  Due to family obligations, Kathie Brown has had to resign as Rear Commodore.  If you would like to fulfill the rest of her term through December 2010, and receive a partial discount on dues, please contact GLSC Commodore Mark Gardner, or e-mail me back.

*  Our caretakers Phil and Mary Howard have resigned and moved to south Texas to manage an RV park.  We'll miss them.  If you know of anyone who would be interested in this paid position, please contact Mark, Roy, or me.

Got your stickers on?  Remember that the Grand River Dam Association requires that your boat be registered and your GRDA sticker showing on your boat each year.  Stickers expire on June 30.  If you've not purchased your new one for 2011, do so now.  You could get fined by GRDA if you are not showing a sticker.

Got insurance?  As a requirement of being a member of Grand Lake Sailing Club, your boat must carry at least liability insurance.  You need to provide that information each year to our club treasurer.  If you've not provided your insurance information to Patsy Hagen please do so as soon as possible. Not providing insurance coverage is a violation of our club by-laws.

*  Earl Rose Memorial Fund - We have $535 in our memorial fund for Earl.  This money has been tagged to help people learn how to sail.  If you would like to make a donation to this, please send your check to Patsy Hagen, club treasurer, and mark it "EARL ROSE MEMORIAL."  We'll take good care and make sure that money is used only for the teaching of sailing.

*  Anyone seen the sign?  The original 1960s sign PORT GROVE SAILING CLUB (our former name before it was changed in about 1978) is still missing.  We don't want to prosecute -- we just want the sign back.  No questions asked!  Return it to the club house and all will be well with the world.

Is your trailer identified?  We need to know if your boat trailer is on the hill.  If it is, please be sure to put your name on it as soon as possible.  Unidentified trailers could cause a problem -- if we don't know it belongs to you!
